The promise of the Braidy Atlas plant in EastPark Industrial Center and other new industries led the Greenup County Fiscal Court to create an industrial authority board to help coordinate such growth in the county.

The commissioners gave final approval to the board’s creation at a recent monthly meeting.

Judge-Executive Bobby Carpenter then announced that he is appointing Doug Collins, Tim Gibbs, Connie Crum, Phil Biggs and John McGinnis to the board.

“The purpose of the board is primarily to guide growth along the Industrial Parkway,” Carpenter said. “This is something that is definitely needed.”

Carpenter said having a guiding board will keep development from happening will-nilly, and also protect against annexation by other bodies without consideration of the long-term effects of such action.

State law allows the creation of non-profit industrial boards as part of economic development. Having a board may make it easier for new companies to obtain assistance from the state.

The new board will have its first meeting in early January.

In other business, the court voted to renew its lease with the City of Flatwoods for the county clerk’s Flatwoods office, adjusted its policy on medical insurance for those 65 and old and approved the letting of bids for a replacement bridge on Laurel Road.
