Russell second overall in Governor’s Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Russell Middle School won second place overall Monday in the state Governor’s Cup competition, and its quick recall team took home the first-place trophy.

In overall points, Russell lost narrowly to Johnson County, Russell coach John VanHoose said. But Johnson’s future problem solving team racked up enough points for winning that event to tip the scales, he said.

“In quick recall, we played today against some good teams,” VanHoose said. “We had some tense situations, but the kids hung in. They wanted to win.”

They had a good incentive — VanHoose pledged they’d get to compete in a national tournament if they took first or second place.

Russell competitors took first places in science and language arts as well.

“The team worked hard all year long. There’s a big break between regionals and the state and it’s easy to let your guard down. But we continued with our 7 a.m. practices. A lot of kids have been continuously studying,” VanHoose said.

Other area quick recall teams performed well, including Raceland-Worthington High School, which came in fourth.

Boyd County Middle School and Russell High School also made it to the top 16.
