ASHLAND, Ky. – Six Ashland area elementary and middle schools each received a $500 FIRST LEGO League robotics grant from Kentucky Power on Friday to support their robotics team.
“Kentucky Power is critically aware of the need for strong science and technology education programs,” said Matthew Satterwhite, Kentucky Power’s president and chief operating officer. “We are proud to help Argillite Elementary and other students and school leaders in eastern Kentucky as they pursue firsthand experiences in science and technology.”
Schools and teachers receiving $500 grants are:
- Crabbe Elementary, Amanda Cole
- Hager Elementary, Amanda Moore
- Oakview Elementary, Emily Stephens
- Charles Russell Elementary, Dawn Geyer
- Poage Elementary, Amanda Hicks
- Ashland Middle School, Mark Harmon
The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics grant is part of efforts by Kentucky Power and its parent company, American Electric Power, to support pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education in science, technology, engineering and math. The FIRST grants support a multi-national robotics competition that teams professionals and students to solve an engineering problem in an intense and competitive way. Grant amounts range from a couple of hundred dollars up to a few thousand. Smaller grants are available for elementary and middle school robotics, while high schools qualify for more.
- FIRST Robotics Competition (high school) -- up to $6,000
- FIRST Tech Challenge (high school) – up to $2,000
- FIRST LEGO League (ages 9-14) – up to $500
- Junior FIRST LEGO League (ages 6-9) – up to $250
AEP and its operating companies have awarded $200,000 in funding to about 100 FIRST robotics program teams across its 11-state service territory for 2018-2017. Recipients must apply to receive a grant by January each year. More information can be found at www.usfirst.org.
